The roots of a flowering plant lie below the surface of the soil, and absorb 
water and minerals into the plant. These substances are then transported 
to other areas of the plant - for instance, where photosynthesis is taking place.
The roots are, of course,  also vital in anchoring the plant into the ground so it does not get blown away by wind.
